Cubase AI, AI features and automation: what the names mean

Cubase AI is an edition name, not an artificial-intelligence claim. What Steinberg lists as AI in Cubase 15, what automation means, and how to move MIDI and audio.

By monody4 min read

The short answer. In Cubase AI, AI is an edition name. The AI feature Steinberg lists for Cubase 15 is stem separation, which it marks as a Pro feature. Automation is a different thing: it is how a DAW records parameter changes. For moving work to another DAW, use Standard MIDI Files for notes and WAV for sound, and read your edition's export pages first.

Search results for "Cubase AI" mix three unrelated ideas: an edition name, machine-learning tools, and an AI assistant that works inside a DAW. This guide separates them. It uses Steinberg's own pages, as of 4 October 2026. We did not run Cubase for this guide.

The edition name

Steinberg's Cubase 15 download page lists five versions of Cubase 15: Pro, Artist, Elements, AI and LE. It says one installer covers all of them: "Your license determines which version is opened." Cubase AI and Cubase LE are the entry-level editions, and Steinberg's What is Cubase AI page covers the edition.

Steinberg's old Cubase AI 4 support page speaks of "Advanced Integration (AI) features" for Steinberg hardware, which is where the letters come from. Nothing in the name says the software uses artificial intelligence.

What Steinberg lists as AI in Cubase 15

Steinberg's Cubase 15 press release of 5 November 2025 describes "AI-powered separation tools, which allow stems to be quickly extracted from mixed audio", and its feature list marks Stem Separation as a Pro feature. The New in Cubase 15 page lists it the same way.

Steinberg's help page for separating stems in Cubase Pro 15 describes the steps: choose Audio, Separate Stems, pick the components you want, optionally combine the selected stems or mute the source event, and for several components Cubase makes a folder track. Check that page for the exact options and your edition's access.

What it is not:

  • Not an assistant. It takes audio in and returns separate audio out. It doesn't take instructions about your project and it doesn't write notes.
  • Not in every edition. Pro is the edition marked in Steinberg's own list. Open Compare Cubase before you buy for this feature.

The same press release lists other new things that are not AI claims, such as a Melodic Pattern Sequencer for Pro and Artist and an Omnivocal beta vocal synthesis engine for all three paid editions. We found no chat assistant in the Steinberg pages we read.

Automation is not AI

In a DAW, automation means recording or drawing how a parameter changes over time: a fader, a pan knob, a filter cutoff. People searching "Cubase AI automation" usually mean one of three things:

  1. Automation lanes for parameters. A normal feature, not an AI one.
  2. Automating repetitive tasks with macros or scripts. What your edition includes is on the compare page.
  3. An AI that operates Cubase for you. That would be a third-party tool. We haven't found or tested one for Cubase, and Steinberg's pages we read don't describe such a feature.

Moving a part out of Cubase

MIDI and WAV are widely supported, as long as the receiving DAW reads them. Steinberg's help has pages for exporting an audio mixdown, for MIDI file export options and for DAWproject in Cubase 14 and 15:

Those help sites load with JavaScript and we could not read their text with our tools, so we don't repeat their details here. Read them for your edition. The DAWproject format's own repository lists Cubase 14 as supporting it, and DAWproject, MIDI files and stems explains what the format carries and what it doesn't.

Start MIDI and stems at the same point, usually bar 1, and note the tempo. Move MIDI and stems between DAWs covers the other side for FL Studio and Logic Pro. monody imports .mid and common audio files and exports a .mid for one clip or one track. It doesn't open Cubase projects or DAWproject.

A quick way to read any "AI" label

You see Ask Usually means
Cubase AI Is it an edition? Yes: an entry-level edition
"AI-powered" stem separation What goes in and comes out? Audio in, separate audio files out. No notes
An assistant panel Can it change the project? Check the maker's docs; some only answer questions
"Automation" Is it parameter automation? A standard feature, not an AI claim

For how the kinds of AI in DAWs differ, see What is an AI DAW?, and for DAWs with assistants that edit the session, the compare page.

Sources

Checked on 4 October 2026. Steinberg's feature, compare and help pages load with JavaScript, so the stem separation steps come from reading the help page through a web tool, and the export pages are linked, not summarized.

Questions

What does AI mean in Cubase AI?
It is the name of an entry-level edition, not a claim about artificial intelligence. Steinberg's older support pages refer to Advanced Integration (AI) features for Steinberg hardware. Steinberg's Cubase 15 download page lists AI and LE alongside Pro, Artist and Elements as versions of Cubase.
Does Cubase have an AI assistant?
In the Steinberg pages we read, the AI feature listed for Cubase 15 is stem separation, not an assistant that edits your project. We didn't find an assistant, which is not proof that none exists, so check Steinberg's current release notes.
Which Cubase edition has stem separation?
Steinberg's Cubase 15 press release and new-features page mark Stem Separation as a Pro feature. It is described as AI-powered separation that extracts stems from mixed audio.
Is automation in Cubase an AI feature?
No. Automation is the recording and drawing of parameter changes, such as volume, pan and plug-in knobs, over time. Steinberg's Cubase 15 press release lists automation enhancements for Pro, Artist and Elements as a workflow change, not as AI.
How do I get MIDI and stems out of Cubase?
Use the export commands in the File menu for MIDI and for an audio mixdown, then check the result in the other DAW. Steinberg's help has pages for both, and for DAWproject. Read them for your edition, because available options differ between editions.
