FL Studio's Gopher: what it can do in your project, and what it can't

What Gopher can control in an FL Studio project since FL Studio 2026, how its Approve/Deny step works, how to open it, and what it doesn't list yet.

The short answer. Gopher is the assistant built into FL Studio. It started as a help assistant that answers questions from FL Studio's manual. Since FL Studio 2026 (7 July 2026) it can also act on your project: mixer levels, panning, routing, channel settings, plugin parameters and Piano roll scripts. It asks you to Approve or Deny before it touches the project. Image-Line describes the control features as "an early, experimental set".

Gopher gets talked about as an AI that "runs FL Studio for you", or as a chatbot that only answers questions. Neither is quite right as of October 2026. This guide sticks to what Image-Line's own manual, release notes and knowledge base say.

What Gopher is

Image-Line's manual introduces it like this: an assistant "that helps you navigate FL Studio, perform complex tasks, and create content using natural-language commands." The Help menu entry describes it as "a Large Language Model (LLM) specifically trained on this Manual and our Knowledge Base", for "any questions about FL Studio or music production."

The manual also says plainly that "as with any 'AI' model Gopher can give you incorrect answers (hallucinate)", and asks you to flag wrong answers with its feedback buttons.

How to open it

  • Press Alt+F1 (Opt+F1 on macOS), or
  • open the Communications panel in the toolbar and pick the Gopher tab.

It needs an internet connection. Image-Line's knowledge base describes it as "a text-based chat system hosted externally", reachable inside FL Studio, or in a browser when you're logged into your Image-Line account.

What it can control in your project

Project control arrived with FL Studio 2026, released on 7 July 2026. The release notes say: "Gopher can now control some features in FL Studio and plugins. NOTE: This is an experimental feature."

The Gopher Control page of the manual lists what it can do. In Image-Line's words, "the controls listed below represent an early, experimental set of features":

Area What Gopher can do
General Inspect the project (mixer, channels, plugins)
Windows and UI Open the Piano roll, Channel Rack, Mixer, Playlist and Browser; highlight UI elements
Transport Play and stop; read or change the tempo
Channel Rack Select, add, rename and remove channels; set volume, pan and colour; mute and solo; step sequencing
Plugins Adjust parameters, as far as the plugin publishes its controls to FL Studio
Piano roll Save and run Python-based scripts; quantize notes
Playlist Rename tracks; set track colour
Mixer Set volume and pan; mute and solo; rename and colour tracks; route channels and tracks; add and remove plugins; reset tracks

The Piano roll part works through scripts. The FL Studio 2026 notes say Gopher "is now able to create improved Piano roll and VFX Scripts on demand", and give the example of asking for "a Piano roll script to remove random notes from a score".

The Approve or Deny step

Gopher doesn't act on a project silently. From the manual: "Gopher can only access your project after you explicitly allow it. When a request requires access, an Approve or Deny prompt will appear beneath your message. Gopher will not proceed without your knowledge and permission."

It also isn't running all the time: "Gopher doesn't run in the background. It only becomes active when you open the Gopher tab, and even then it functions as an internal web page inside FL Studio."

What it doesn't list (yet)

Image-Line says it is "actively expanding and refining Gopher's capabilities, so functionality may be limited or subject to change". Going by the control list above, these aren't on it as of October 2026:

  • arranging clips in the Playlist (it can rename and colour Playlist tracks)
  • writing notes directly, other than through Piano roll scripts
  • automation clips
  • recording, rendering or exporting
  • plugins that don't publish their parameters to FL Studio

Missing from the list doesn't mean impossible forever. These features change with each update, so check the manual page before you rely on one.

Your data

Image-Line's knowledge base article on Gopher and data says:

  • "the text of your request is logged so our team can improve the feature";
  • when you allow it, Gopher may read "Channel names, Plugin names, and their current settings";
  • project data "is not saved, stored, or retained once the session ends";
  • "We will never use customer data from Gopher to train, develop, or refine artificial intelligence systems."

Image-Line doesn't name the company behind the underlying model.

Good first requests

Start with things you can check at a glance:

  • "Where do I change the audio buffer size?" (help, no project access)
  • "Set the hats channel to −6 dB and pan it a little to the left."
  • "Route the kick and snare channels to a new mixer track and name it Drums."
  • "Write a Piano roll script that removes random notes from the selected pattern."
  • "Inspect the project and tell me which mixer tracks have no plugins."

Save a copy of the project before you let any assistant change it. That's a good habit with every tool, experimental ones especially.

Other DAWs with an assistant

Gopher is one of several assistants that now work inside a DAW. monody is another: a separate DAW for macOS with an assistant built in, which edits the session as notes, devices and automation, marks everything it changed, and lets you flip a whole request with Before/After. There's a real recorded example in Four requests, one real session. For how the different kinds of "AI DAW" compare, see What is an AI DAW? and, for Ableton Live, AI in Ableton Live.

Questions

What is Gopher in FL Studio?
Gopher is Image-Line's assistant inside FL Studio, a large language model focused on FL Studio. It answers questions from the FL Studio manual and knowledge base, and since FL Studio 2026 it can also carry out some tasks in your project, such as setting mixer levels, routing channels and adjusting plugin parameters.
How do I open Gopher in FL Studio?
Press Alt+F1 (Opt+F1 on macOS), or open the Communications panel and choose the Gopher tab. It needs an internet connection.
Can Gopher change my FL Studio project?
Yes, for the features Image-Line lists, and only after you allow it. When a request needs access to your project, an Approve or Deny prompt appears under your message. Image-Line calls the control features an early, experimental set.
Which FL Studio version added Gopher project control?
FL Studio 2026, released on 7 July 2026. Its release notes say "Gopher can now control some features in FL Studio and plugins."
Does Gopher train on my projects?
Image-Line says it will never use customer data from Gopher to train, develop or refine AI systems, and that project data isn't kept after the session ends. It does log the text of your requests to improve the feature.
Can Gopher arrange my song in the Playlist?
Not according to Image-Line's control list. For the Playlist it lists renaming tracks and setting their colour; arranging clips isn't on the list.
