AI in music software
Pro Tools and AI: what Avid documents, and how to move MIDI and audio
Pro Tools' AI-related tools in Avid's own guides, from speech to text to ARA and Audio to MIDI, which ones edit a session, and the steps for MIDI and stems.
The short answer. In the Pro Tools 2026.4 Reference Guide and Avid's knowledge base, the AI-related tools are speech to text, third-party ARA analysis plug-ins such as Melodyne, and an Audio to MIDI conversion built on Melodyne. Avid has also shown a stem separator as a tech preview. None of these is described as an assistant that changes your session. For moving work to another DAW, Pro Tools exports Standard MIDI Files and bounces audio.
"Pro Tools AI" can mean at least three different things: a model that reads speech, a plug-in that analyses audio so you can edit it like notes, or a chat assistant that operates the DAW. Avid's guides document the first two. This guide sorts them by what they take in and what they hand back, then covers the file steps for taking a part elsewhere. It uses the Pro Tools 2026.4 Reference Guide, which we read directly, plus Avid's knowledge base and its 24 September 2026 article on IBC 2026, as of 4 October 2026. We did not run Pro Tools.
What Avid documents
| Tool | Takes in | Hands back | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speech to Text | Audio with speech or sung lyrics | A transcript you can edit audio by | Avid's FAQ |
| ARA plug-ins, such as Melodyne | An audio clip or track | An analysis you edit inside Pro Tools | Reference Guide, Integrated ARA Plugins |
| Audio to MIDI | An audio track or clip | A new MIDI or Instrument track | Reference Guide, Melodyne Editing and Audio to MIDI |
| Stem Separator Extension | A stereo mix | Separate stems | Avid's IBC 2026 article, tech preview |
Speech to Text. Avid's FAQ says Pro Tools 2025.6 added analysis of audio for speech or sung lyrics, with the text shown under the clips so you can edit audio "by text". It is a separate installer for Pro Tools Studio and Ultimate customers. The FAQ says it is "a separately-installed local AI/ML model that accurately detects speech in 21 languages" and that no internet connection is needed. The 2026.4 release notes add transcript data passing through to rendered files and selecting clips by word, sentence or speaker. It transcribes. It does not write music or change your arrangement.
ARA plug-ins. ARA lets a plug-in analyse a clip and edit it in place. Melodyne Essentials is installed with all Pro Tools tiers, and the guide says a Melodyne Essentials license is included with all versions except Pro Tools Intro. The guide also covers Acoustica and other integrated ARA plug-ins, whose ARA data is stored in a separate "ARA Data" folder inside the session folder. Keep that folder when you copy a session.
Audio to MIDI. The guide says Pro Tools lets you extract MIDI pitch and velocity data from selected audio tracks and paste it to new MIDI or Instrument tracks, through Track, Extract MIDI to New Track, or by dragging audio clips onto a MIDI or Instrument track. You choose a Conversion Type such as Melodic for melodic material or Percussive for drums, and what to do with the source track. The result is a draft to check by ear, not a transcription you can trust without listening.
Stem Separator Extension. Avid's 24 September 2026 article on IBC 2026 describes a Pro Tools Stem Separator that uses local AI processing to isolate elements of a mixed track, lets you preview the results, and then drag stems back into the session or write them as new tracks. It uses a new Pro Tools Extension format, and Avid showed it as a tech preview. A preview isn't a statement about when or how it ships, so check Avid's current availability before you plan around it.
What none of these are
The guides above do not describe an assistant that takes instructions and changes your tracks, sends or plug-ins. If you want that, FL Studio's Gopher, Waveform 14's assistant and monody take instructions in different ways, covered in What is an AI DAW?. We haven't compared them with Pro Tools, and monody is a separate DAW, not an add-on.
Taking MIDI out of Pro Tools
From the Reference Guide's Importing and Exporting Session Data chapter:
- Unmute the tracks you want. Mute any MIDI tracks you don't want included. For Instrument tracks use the MIDI mute button in the Instruments view.
- File, Export, MIDI. In the Export MIDI Settings dialog choose format 1 (multitrack) or 0 (single track).
- Pick the location reference. If the Song Start differs from the Session Start, choose which one the file should use. Apply Real-Time Properties is a separate checkbox.
- Save. Pro Tools adds ".mid".
The file contains notes, controller events, program changes, System Exclusive data, tempo, meter and markers, plus the timecode start. The guide lists what is lost: chord symbols and chord diagrams are not exported, device assignments are not retained though channel assignments are, and playlist information is lost, so a track with dozens of clips comes back as single clips. Mute automation and muted clips don't affect the export.
Individual tracks can be exported with a right-click on the track name and Export MIDI.
Bringing MIDI into Pro Tools
File, Import, MIDI, or drag the file onto the Timeline, a track, the Track List or the Clip List. The MIDI Import Options dialog lets you create Instrument or MIDI tracks or send the file to the Clip List, choose the location (session start, song start, selection or spot), and decide whether to import the tempo map and key signature, which overwrite what the session has. The guide says Type 0 files are split by channel and Type 1 files put each track on its own new track. Markers come in only if the session has none. Then assign an instrument and channel to each new track in the Mix window.
Getting audio out
- Mix or sub-mix: File, Bounce Mix. The bounce includes audible tracks routed to the chosen output, and muted tracks are left out. If you solo any track, only the soloed ones are included.
- One track: select it and choose Track, Bounce. Audio, Aux Input, Master Fader and Instrument tracks can be bounced. The Track Bounce dialog has the Bounce Mix options plus whether to render volume and pan automation.
- Between Pro Tools sessions: File, Export, Selected Tracks As New Session opens the Save Copy In dialog and is meant for collaborators who also use Pro Tools.
- AAF and OMF: Pro Tools imports AAF and OMF sequences. Other DAWs vary in how much of them they read, and Ardour's manual notes that both standards are only partly supported across DAWs.
Start every stem at the same point, usually bar 1, and note the tempo. Move MIDI and stems between DAWs covers the other side for FL Studio and Logic Pro, and DAWproject, MIDI files and stems covers project formats. We didn't find Pro Tools on the DAWproject support lists we read.
Where monody fits
monody can't open a Pro Tools session and doesn't run inside Pro Tools. It is a separate DAW for macOS, and a part written there leaves as a .mid for one clip or one track, as in AI basslines you can edit. Ardour's manual documents a basic import of Pro Tools sessions with audio regions and MIDI notes, if you want a free way to open a .ptx. We haven't tried it.

Questions
- Does Pro Tools have AI?
- Avid documents a speech-to-text engine that it calls a local AI/ML model, available to Pro Tools Studio and Ultimate. Avid also showed a Pro Tools Stem Separator Extension as a tech preview at IBC 2026. We found no assistant that edits a session in the guides we read.
- Can Pro Tools turn audio into MIDI?
- Yes, through its Melodyne integration. You can extract pitch and velocity data from an audio track onto a new MIDI or Instrument track, or drag audio clips to a MIDI or Instrument track. The Reference Guide describes it as conversion, with Melodic and Percussive types.
- How do I export MIDI from Pro Tools?
- Unmute the MIDI and Instrument tracks you want, choose File, Export, MIDI, pick format 1 for multitrack or 0 for single track, and save. The guide says notes, controllers, program changes, SysEx, tempo, meter and markers are exported, and playlist information and device assignments are lost.
- How do I export stems from Pro Tools?
- Use File, Bounce Mix for mixes and sub-mixes, or Track, Bounce for individual audio, Aux, Master Fader and Instrument tracks. The Track Bounce dialog adds options to render volume and pan automation.
- Does monody open Pro Tools sessions or run as an AAX plug-in?
- No. monody doesn't open .ptx sessions and isn't a plug-in in any format. Move parts with MIDI files and audio stems.
